EXCERPT

CHAPTER ONE: Maddy

I’m dating an angel.

Up until yesterday, I thought they didn’t exist. Now I’m falling in love with one.

Considering the insane events that have happened in the last five days—especially the last twenty-four hours—I shouldn’t be focusing on what MJ is. I am, though.

Whether or not I believed in them, angel references are everywhere. They appear in books, movies, and TV, wearing anything from white togas to trench coats. Their image has been made into figurines and appears on jewelry and even clothes. They’re a symbol of hope that billions of people all over the world have accepted. Some people pray to them daily, assured in their beliefs; others do it in times of desperation, when all hope seems lost. So many people have prayed for a miracle—prayed for proof that someone is listening.

Why then was I chosen over all of them?

I glance over at MJ lying beside me on Hiniker Bridge. He’s staring at the clouds with his head resting on his arms. It’s easy to forget what he is. His short brown hair is messy as if only his fingers have touched it, his hazel eyes suck me in no matter how far apart we are, and his smile shines brighter than high beams on the darkest night. He wears plain white shirts and dark jeans, and somehow on him they look better than a designer outfit—not that I wouldn’t mind seeing him in one. The only thing keeping him from being perfect is the silence coming from his chest.

My heart stutters, pounding out the truth I can’t ignore. MJ is dead.

He is dead and I am not.

A sigh unintentionally leaves my lips.

MJ rolls to face me. “What is it?”

I offer a weak smile. “Nothing.”

He reaches out, taking my hand. A buzzing jolt of energy—his essence—courses through my body, searching for any clues as to what upset me. He frowns, not liking whatever he found.

“No more secrets, remember?”

All morning we’ve been sharing small details of our lives, making good on the promise we made yesterday. MJ’s asked me about school, hobbies, and music. I’ve asked about places he’s traveled and what foods he’d like to try now that he can taste again. As nice as it is to have time like this—where everything is calm—we’re both deflecting.

He’s distracting me from thinking about yesterday—the worst day of my life. I’m avoiding anything even remotely related to his angelic side. But we can’t avoid it forever. At some point, we’ll have to talk about it if I want to have a true relationship with him.

Excerpts

Excerpt 1

My entire body pulses in the wake of his touch. His words “if you were mine” keep circling around in my head, and with each rotation, something inside me grows. He makes me feel happy and less broken. I feel I could take on the world as long as he’s beside me. Whatever he is, I don’t care. I’ve never felt anything like this, and I’ll go to Hell and back to keep it. Regardless of what happens to me, I have to protect him. I have to keep him safe, always.

He grins and squeezes my hand again. My body responds with such intensity, I almost feel as if I were floating. I don’t want it to ever stop. I want to stay strong. I want to be brave. I want to feel safe. He gives me all of that. I want to hold him forever, even if it’s only his hand.

“Tomorrow,” he says, pulling me from my thoughts. “I’ll find a way to see you.”

“Promise?”

Excerpt 2

My heart flutters. I really do like MJ. I blush and pop a few grapes into my mouth. As ecstatic as that makes me feel, I still don’t know, fully, if I can trust him—not until I know what he is. “So … you still haven’t answered my original question. Government experiment, superhero, or something else. Which is it?”

He sighs, shaking his head. “I wasn’t created in a lab somewhere.”

“What about an alien?”

“No.”

“Mutant?”

“No.”

“Warlock?”

“Wouldn’t that fall under the category of magician?”

“Magicians are usually fake. Warlocks and witches could be real. So are you one?”

“No.”

Stumped, I rest my chin on my hand and huff in exasperation.

“Give up?” he asks.

“No. But I’ve made some good progress on my list.”

“You have a list?”

“Uh huh.” I toss a few more grapes into my mouth.

“Of what you think I might be?”

I nod.

“I don’t suppose you could just let it go?”

I narrow my eyes at him. “If I did a bunch of crazy things that you couldn’t explain, would you let it go?”

He smirks and shakes his head. “You win.

Excerpt  3

“Now say if you had changed even one of those things, your destiny would be completely different.”

I know which fork I would choose to redo if I could. It’s the same one I’ve regretted time and time again. If I could go back, I would have never rejected his first kiss.

Damien smiles. “Say, for example, this alternate-reality dream of yours is one where we kissed the first night. Everything would have been different between us. However, it is because you rejected my kiss that I looked at you differently. It is because you were sent away that I missed you. It is because you were promised to another man that I came there that night, which ultimately led to us being together now. As much as I wished we had kissed the first night, I am glad we did not. I, for one, like this path much better.”
