Review

I’m a little at odds with this story. Was it enjoyable? Yes but it wasn’t anything memorable thou. I felt like the story was finishing up; and it could have and then the author decides it add a two weeks later section. Nothing wrong with that, but when reading it just felt like an add on not a continuation of the story.

The little mystery in the story is what keep me reading til the end, but overall I’m left wanting more.

Review

I was drawn to this book because of the blurb and it sounded like an interesting spin of ‘Little Red Riding Hood’. However it fell a little short of more. I was expecting something a little more from the story and the characters. Maybe it was just a little too short for me. By the time I was really get into, it just ended.

Overall there was good character develop and the sex scenes were very hot for what little there is of the story.

The Others #4

5 stars

Synopsis

For centuries, the Others and humans have lived side by side in uneasy peace. But when humankind oversteps its bounds, the Others will have to decide how much humanity they’re willing to tolerate—both within themselves and within their community…

Since the Others allied themselves with the cassandra sangue, the fragile yet powerful human blood prophets who were being exploited by their own kind, the delicate dynamic between humans and Others changed. Some, like Simon Wolfgard, wolf shifter and leader of the Lakeside Courtyard, and blood prophet Meg Corbyn, see the new, closer companionship as beneficial—both personally and practically.

But not everyone is convinced. A group of radical humans is seeking to usurp land through a series of violent attacks on the Others. What they don’t realize is that there are older and more dangerous forces than shifters and vampires protecting the land that belongs to the Others—and those forces are willing to do whatever is necessary to protect what is theirs…

Review

After the ending of the last book I couldn’t wait to get my paws on Marked In Flesh. The wait between books is just too long, but it was oh so worth it in the end. As soon as I started this book I was sucked back into the world of The Others and the human pack like no time had passed between the release of Vision In Silver and Marked In Flesh.

Anne Bishop really has a way with words and this story in no different. There is just something so captivating about the characters she creates and the world that she builds around them. As a reader, I feel as if I’m really there with the characters going through everything that they are going through at the same time.

Marked in Flesh starts out a little differently to the rest of the books in the series so far. There are a lot of POVs to consider and while it may be a little confusing as to who is say what and when, but it all makes sense the more you read. I loved reading about how different characters were reacting to the events around them. It really opened my eyes the world that Ms Bishop has created for The Others.

“We will give you some time to decide how much human the terra indigene will keep”

This books also focuses more heavily on The Others and Humans First and Last movement. The struggle between the two has hit an ultimate peak and the consequence from the actions of the HFL were felt by both sides when the Elders decided to take matters into their own hands.

After the way the last book ended I was really excited to see where Meg and Simon’s relationship would go. However with everything else that was going on, I felt that they had very little on page time together. I really wanted to see more of them. Just when I thought something major was going to happen and it didn’t, I think my heart gave out. You can do this to me. It is so unfair. I’m living for the next book. Please hurry I must find out what happens next.

PS. For some strange reason when I finished reading Marked in Flesh the first thing that came to mind was the song ‘Colours of the Wind’ from Disney’s Pocahontas. As strange as it may seem, there are lyrics in there that relate very well to this story.

Review

I liked where this story was going but it was just way too short. It felt like a was reading more of an outline for a novel rather than an actual book. I really felt like it could have been fleshed out lot more.

In saying that, I did enjoy the stories and characters that the author has created and will be checking out the rest of the books in the series.

BLURB

Fall in Love with Ares God of War and Alena MacLeod. Together they Rock the World from the Heights of Olympus to the Celtic Moors.

In The Heart of War, Magdalena MacLeod has been on the run from Cernunnos, Great Horned God, for 200 years when she mysteriously washes ashore on secluded isle of the God of War. When the Olympians discover her presence on Ares’ island, they send Apollo to the island to retrieve her while Ares is away. Diplomatically winding her way out of immediately going to Olympus and having nowhere to turn, Alena strikes a bargain with the God of War–her virginity for his protection.

Ares sees a sweeter deal; her in his bed and himself back in his rightful place on Olympus even if it means turning Alena over to Zeus. After Alena proves herself to Ares in battle and his bed, the God of War must choose between his Divinely Dysfunctional Family, his pride, and Alena.

Child of War-A God is Born  Ares and Alena have settled on snowy Olympus to await the birth of their son, Raven. Before Raven is even born, Zeus outwardly despises him for his Fey blood. With only one to keep his family safe from his father, Zeus the God of Gods, Ares enters into a blood pact that could cost the God of War everything he holds dear.

After a harrowing birth wherein mother and son are nearly lost to Ares, it quickly becomes clear that Raven may be the most powerful and cunning Olympian ever born despite his muddled bloodline. Zeus, Apollo, and Aphrodite plot against the new family by carefully planting the seeds of rage and doubt in Ravens’ mind, they turn son against mother. It appears as though Cernunnos’ prophecy is coming to life as Raven grows to be a very angry young man.

As the true past between the Olympians and Celts is revealed, the battle for Ravens’ mind and the ultimate control of Olympus begins. Before it’s over, the white snows of Olympus will run red with blood.

Child of War-Rising Son sees Raven on the verge of manhood as his rampage continues and he begins the difficult path to Acceptance by his fellow Olympians. Out to prove he’s as good, if not better than, any of them he bests the Trials set before him by Hades and Poseidon. This isn’t enough for him, in his quest to prove to his Father, Ares, that he is an Olympian Raven preys upon the Mortals below Olympus in a time of great weakness. Enlisting the aid of his Uncle Apollo and settling for nothing less than utter Chaos, together they push the Mortals to pure anarchy. Ready to conquer the remainder of his Trials so he may take his place at the Counsel Table, and bring Ares the glory Cernunnos once prophesized, only one thing stands in his way; the night his Mother fell down the stairs.

Apollo, ever the Man Behind the Curtain, pulls Raven’s strings like a true puppet master. It’s far too late when Raven realizes all he’s done in hopes of pleasing his Father actually makes Ares look guilty of destroying the Mortal World. A little Chaos and a little Anarchy aren’t enough for the Golden God, in his on-going quest to destroy Ares, Apollo sets a plague loose upon the embroiled Earth. By the time the Olympians discover what’s going on twenty million people are dead with the number multiplying exponentially every day.

Women of War gives us a brief reprieve from the death and darkness as we journey backward in time spanning four generations of women in Alena’s family. From her great-grandmother, Shar Draiocht the last known Queen of the Dark Kingdom to her tortured daughter Morrowind, to Maven Alena’s free-spirited mother and through the lonely life of Alena MacLeod ending where The Heart of War begins with the night Alena washes up on Ares’ shore. With intensity, lust, fear, and strength these Women of War make their way in the world revealing the hidden truths of the past and Ares true connection to his beloved Wife, Alena.

Kingdoms of War, the OF WAR Series Finale, sees nearly four billion souls lost to the ravages of Anarchy and the dreaded disease Major Falls.  Ares, Athena, and Raven journey the Mortal World vainly reaching for a sliver of what was only to discover what will be. From the fiery wreckage a new world is slowly arising one where the descendants of Olympians, Celts, Dark Fae, and all manner of Magickal Being will rule.

Ares and Athena wander the world, hoping to curtail further damage by obliterating weapons of mass destruction the Wolf inside the God of War slowly succumbs to Major Falls. A rabid God of War is not a pretty sight. Soon it becomes clear that Ares may not live to see the glory of Olympus restored.

By the time Ares’ fevered body is brought to Olympus, Apollo’s descent into madness is utterly complete. The Gold God is quite insane as he expertly kills off the members of his Divinely Dysfunctional Family. Yet, Alena’s greatest nemesis holds the key to saving Ares’ life. The price is high and, should she pay it, Alena can’t be sure Ares would ever be able to forgive her.

EXCERPT

Ares was in a foul mood and suffering from a splitting headache when he arrived back on the island with Alena. “Go inside.” He said gruffly and pointed toward the cliffs and the cave above.

“Ares?”

“Please, Alena, just do as I ask. Go.”

She didn’t want to leave him here, alone, on the beach but it didn’t appear Ares was wanted company, not hers anyway. In the face of his Father and the other Olympians, Ares stood tall and strong. He’d come to her aid just as he said he would and kept his promise. Alena was stunned. When Zeus said he would return Ares’ property and his station to him, she felt sure the God of War would sell her down the river. She wanted to thank him, wanted to ask why he had done it but she held her tongue. “Yes, my Lord.” Hiking up the hem of the dress, she turned to make her way up the long strange stairs leading from the beach to the top of the cliff. With a heavy heart, she walked a few steps until she got to the base of the stairs and there she turned around. Ares was sitting on the sand facing the water and the setting sun. He had thrown off the belt with the heavy sword and his thick leather vest; they were in the sand next to him as he sat there with his head down in his hands. She could not leave him there. Quietly coming up behind him, Alena sat down, wrapped one arm over his left shoulder and the other under his right lacing her fingers together and pulling him backward. Alena expected him to balk or to fight but, instead, Ares settled backward into her arms, rested his head in the crook between her neck and shoulder as he let out an exhausted sigh. “I’m sorry I’m so much trouble, my Lord.” She whispered as she nestled her face into his hair.

Letting the softness of her touch and the warmth of her body comfort him, Ares closed his eyes and drew in the peaceful shelter she offered. “It’s not you. It’s Them.”

The Olympians were quite the Divinely Dysfunctional Family. Alena had never seen or heard so much bitter bickering from one clan. If that was her Family, she might be damn happy that she lived in Exile on a beautiful island such as this. “They’re awful.” She whispered in his ear careful not to let any prying ears overhear. Ares gave out a deep chuckle and then another sigh as his hand rose up to caress her arm. She thought of how brave, how daring, and even dashing, Ares had been as he stood there telling all of them they could not have her. When she listened to him speak of Artemis, Alena nearly cried. Then she had been stunned into silence having expected the God of War to hand her over, maybe not with ease but readily enough, in return for his crown and scepter. “Thank you for keeping your promise.”

“You expected this chauvinistic pig to do less.” Ares mused still with his eyes closed. “Everyone does.”

AUTHOR BIO

It was in the 4th grade when Lisa discovered she was a naturally gifted writer. The teacher asked the class to pen a story about a baby bird’s first flight and read them to the class. Putting pencil to paper, Lisa was instantly whisked away by a force she couldn’t explain. When they were finished, all of the children read their happy stories to the class. Not Lisa. She got up and told of how the baby bird flew too high, hit a plane, crashed to the ground and died. She told of how the mama bird and daddy bird cried of how even God was upset sending the rains pouring from the sky. The class was speechless when she finished all they could do was stare at her. The teacher kept her after class told her the story was very good but it was different from the others. She asked Lisa if she’d ever heard of Icarus and did she base her story on him. Lisa had yet to encounter Greek Mythology or hear a whisper of Icarus. As Lisa left the classroom the teacher again told her how good the story was but suggested she might want to write something happier next time. When Lisa asked her teacher “why” she had no answer. Luckily for us, Lisa never took that teacher’s advice.

Today she brings us stories rich with romance along with the trials and tribulations that make up the life in which we live.

EXCERPT

Rose could barely catch her breath. He was here. He was real. Her Dimitri. Same cloudy grey eyes, the same dangerous smile that said he never took the world too seriously. He smelled the same, though there was an edge of ash and soot there, but he was solid, real. His heart beat the same as it always had, steady and strong under her fingers. He had held her close, and she’d found Rose’s nook, as he’d called it, on his chest. The same man, but he wasn’t. He didn’t know her. He didn’t understand. Hadn’t called her milaya moya, my sweet. He hadn’t thrown her over the nearest surface and made love to her until she couldn’t stand up for the next three days. He hadn’t lifted her off her feet just because he thought she might be tired standing.

He won’t because he doesn’t remember me.

All she wanted was the oblivion of his touch. She wasn’t sure what was worst, having only a memory of him, or having him here and she was the only one who remembered that they ever shared anything between them. She didn’t even know how they were going to deal with the pack. To them, he was their alpha. They didn’t see any difference in the way he smelled or looked. They knew it was him, but he had died. They’d all felt it, and, eventually, when the happiness that he returned had faded, they would ask. She would deal with that later. For now she just wanted him.

“Dimitri,” she said, stepping back against his chest.

“Hmm?” he asked as she kissed her way up the side of his throat, standing up on her tip toes to reach him. His fingers tightened on her shoulders, and then he growled, a low rumble that streaked through her and down to her clit in seconds. It didn’t have the undertone of a wolf, but it was close enough.

“Just take me,” she whispered against his skin.

An impulsive decision can alter the course of your life.

Adara’s enigmatic and sexy boss asks her a simple question. “How are you going to celebrate your twenty-first birthday?” Sounds innocent enough, until he suggests she go to Ambrosia, the infamous BDSM club. She’d no idea her boss harbored such a dark side, including erotic bondage and whips.

To volunteer for scars and bruises will never appear on her to-do list. Since her adoptive parents died six years ago, she’s accumulated enough of them from her twisted uncle and cousin.

Now, her long-awaited twenty-first birthday and inheritance are days away. The money means nothing, escape means survival. Working for Julien’s firm has provided her with tips and tricks on how to disappear.

Julien Crofton, an Ex-Special Forces private investigator, hired Adara six months ago. Her subtle signs of ongoing abuse have tied him in knots, not the good kind. Still, erotic images of what he’d like to teach her preclude rational thought as he continues to finagle her under his protective wing.

When all hell breaks loose, he must protect her from her sadistic family and a psychopathic killer who is leaving notes and packaged body parts. The warnings are clear—Adara is off limits.

Even while evading Adara’s vicious family and an unknown psychopathic stalker, passion ignites. In progressive increments, Julien fans her spark of infatuation into a raging inferno. Can Adara learn that perhaps not all men are evil and just maybe…whips can be fun?

Carnal Beginnings teaser 2

EXCERPT

The setting sun reminded him her husband would be off work soon, probably carry his rage home looking for a target. Lord, this brought back some of his own buried memories. No time for that now.

A combination of ignorance and nonchalance framed the bull’s eye she wore on her forehead. He’d advised her to leave home two days ago. They could handle legalities later but not if she lacked a pulse. Stubborn woman insisted on returning. Her late morning call today surprised him, finally ready to pack and leave. Failure to meet him at his office did not.

This woman needed help, even if she didn’t realize it. As a private investigator, he’d seen this scenario rehearsed many times. For reasons unknown, human nature’s broken record played out on the Mobius strip, fate having trapped him in the loop.

The steady slap and scrape of his windshield wipers whisked the few drops of rain from his windshield, evidence that heaven cried for its angels. He stomped the accelerator. His Mazda ate up the miles as he tried to focus his mind. The closer he got to her house, the more his mind screamed with recriminations…Too late. You should have come to her house this morning.

Stones skittered into the grass bordering her driveway as his car slid to a stop in front of her bungalow. The one with the front door ajar. Oh God, I am too late. Not again. He had little recollection of getting out of his car or running into her house. He knew in his gut, he’d failed. He’d promised her he’d help, and he failed. It didn’t matter that she’d ignored his advice.

In the middle of the living room floor, she lay face down, remnants of pain still etched in her expression. Naked, blood pooled under her abdomen in an ever-widening arc. Spatters of red adorned the surrounding wall cabinets, TV, and sofa. Her hair, burnt copper in the fading light streaming through the bay window, didn’t cover her wide staring eyes. His heart pounded in his chest, sweat beaded his forehead. With shaking fingers, he bent and touched her neck, a pulse, a weak one, fast and thready. She’ll never make it, his subconscious roared through his head as he snatched up his cell to dial nine one one.

The universe he bellowed his pain to felt colder than her body. The warmth of her soul flowed out, staining the carpet with wild abandon. He could smell the residue of gunpowder. The yapping of her ankle biter at his feet didn’t register in his mind until he saw its footprints surrounding the woman’s thin frame, written in her blood.

There were no second chances. His excuses wouldn’t comfort her now.

Synopsis:

When a slave uprising threatens the life of Syreena, the daughter of an eighteenth century plantation owner, a servant uses voodoo to transform her into a mermaid. The spell will be only broken when she returns to the beach where it was cast. After three hundred years of swimming, she’s ready to trade fins for legs.  The only problem is she can’t find her way home.

Dylan, a twenty-first century Coast Guard Officer, has sworn off love for the sea. When a wave throws him overboard, Syreena uses her amulet to ward off the sharks and save his life.

With Syreena and Dylan stranded on a remote cay, Dylan has the know-how to build a raft and navigate but his near-drowning has made him terrified of the water. Syrenna will use every charm she has to convince Dylan to take her home.

Even if it means falling in love. . .

Excerpt:

“Want to take that walk now?”

“Not until you put your pants back on,” she answered.

“Deal,” he said. “Close your eyes. I’m coming for my shorts.”

Syreena had the grace to lower her eyes demurely. As if she hadn’t been watching him the entire time he walked toward her.

He stepped into his shorts, stiff with the salt water, and zipped the fly. “Ready?”

“Can I look now?”

“You’ve been looking the whole time.”

“Have not,” she replied.

“Can’t fool me.” He offered her his hand and pulled her to her feet. “Which way?”

She pointed to the beach leading north. “Let’s walk that way. There’s a little cove up there where things like to wash up after a storm.”

He didn’t want to let go of her hand. It was so small, so delicate. “I’m following you,” he said, letting go one finger at a time.

The beach was wide and the sand was so fine it felt like flour beneath his feet. The sun was near its apex and his shoulders burned with the heat. For the first time since he’d landed on this island, he felt dry. The water was so blue it looked fake, like a retouched calendar.

The cut still hurt when we walked. He was taking it slow, walking in the dry sand out of reach of the water, while Syreena combed the beach for interesting finds.

The water. What the hell had that been about?

“Look at this,” she said, dashing back to the water line. The excitement made her voice sound child-like. “I can’t believe it!” Syreena bent at the waist and picked something from the sand. Dylan tried not to stare at her ass. The shimmery skirt was just long enough to make it hard to see anything but short enough to make him hope.

“What is it?”

“It’s a ring!” She dipped it into the water and ran back to him. “Look! A diamond ring.”

It was an engagement ring. A large diamond, catching the rays of the sun, was set into a gold band. “Any inscription?” he asked.

She wrinkled her brow. “Inscription?”

He reached out his hand. Turning the ring over and over in the light, there was nothing on the inside of the band. “Nope. Blank.”

It was just as well; it wasn’t like they could find the owner anyway. They were, after all, in the same boat as Gilligan only without the Professor or the radio.

“It fits perfectly,” Syreena squealed, placing it on her ring finger.

A chill ran up his spine. He wasn’t sure exactly why.
