EXCERPT
“Angel, I’m…” The word sorry is right there on my lips, but instead of saying it, I slam them against hers before either of us can react. Angel’s muffled protest is trapped between our mouths, and her palms fly to my chest as if to push me away. Only she doesn’t. Her fingers curl into my shirt, those sharp nails digging into my skin.
My control breaks. My hand dives into her hair, twisting it around my fingers. We kiss harder, ignoring the fact we’re in a public parking lot. And when she moans into my mouth, I lose it and push her against the car.
“Stop.” Angel breaks the kiss, her chest rising and falling with labored breaths as she pulls away. Her fingers press against her swollen lips as if they will somehow erase the feel of mine.
They won’t. Because like it or not, when I want something, I get it. I wanted out of this mess, so I made her an offer that would make history.
But now…
We’re going to rewrite it.
However, Angel has to be handled carefully, so I play the apologetic asshole role with gusto.
Stepping back, I rake a hand through my hair. “That was out of line.”
She crosses her arms over her chest. “You think?”
Sighing, I press my thumb against my temple and throw out a final Hail Mary. “Look, what do you have to lose? A crappy apartment and a worthless job?”
For some reason, that seems to get to her, and she relaxes the grip her arms have on her chest. “What’s in it for you? And be straight with me this time. No more of this half-answer crap. I want the truth.”
“A story.”
Angel raises her eyebrows and glares at me.
I roll my eyes. “And money. Look, I don’t care how much a man has, five-hundred-k is five-hundred-k.” It’s the truth, something I didn’t mean to throw out there, but my master plan is going down in flames pretty fast.
“That’s another half-answer,” she accuses, and then twists around to walk away, but I catch her arm and spin her back around.
“Fine, you want the truth? You don’t get to where I am in life and not step on a lot of toes along the way, sweetheart. Some were by accident, and others were very much on purpose.
Somebody didn’t like what he saw in the mirror I shoved in front of his face and decided to take it out on my ass. If I don’t get some cash flow soon, I’m going to lose everything.”
An awkward second of silence quickly turns into five. Then ten. Just as I’m about to do something drastic like speak the name of a man who should never be used as a bargaining tool, she sighs.
“Fine.”
Wait, what?
“Fine?”
“I know I’ll live to regret this, but I can’t argue that half a million would change my life.”
“So, that’s a yes?” I ask, slowly. “You’ll do it?”
“Yes. Provided you guarantee the DNA test will prove I’m Alexandra Romanov, you’ve got a deal.”

Synopsis

Foster Kavanaugh, former Navy SEAL, knows what it’s like to be the top dog, the man in charge, the one calling the shots. Now that he’s running his own security consulting firm, not much has changed.

Except the curvy blonde he hired as his office manager.

Noelle Davis has been through the damn ringer. Swearing off men after escaping a toxic relationship, she’s grateful for a fresh start—new job included. Except her job isn’t tranquil and calm. In fact, it’s quite the opposite because her boss is the most infuriating man on the planet.

And, not to mention, sexy as hell.

Foster has limits. Rules. No attachments allowed because he doesn’t do love—and Noelle Davis foiled that plan and took a red pen to his list of rules. With her smart mouth and quick witted banter, he found the woman beginning to creep past his defenses.

When circumstances put Noelle in a perilous position, the first person to come to her rescue is none other than Foster Kavanaugh. She gets to see the man in action—not as her aggravating boss, but the man who will stop at nothing to keep her safe.

The same man who makes her want to reconsider her self-imposed embargo of men.

The man she wants to get to know now that she’s seen another side of him.

The man who makes her want…more.

But is more possible when you’re OUT OF LOVE?

Review

Oh wow! This is my second RC Boldt book for the year and she was a new to me author for this year too. I just love the authors writing style and characters. She really knows how to draw you in and grip you from the very start.

I instantly fell in love with Foster and Noelle and I loved watching their relationship unfold. It was like watching two friends, who secretly loved each other finally get together. Their relationship felt that real to me. I never wanted the story to end. I’m so glad that they were able to get their happy ending after everything that they go through.

Synopsis

I’ve never been afraid of the dark…but that doesn’t mean I wanted to live in it. And maybe everyone wants what they can’t have, but I should’ve thought it over before I accepted the key and unlocked the door to their forbidden world.

Number One is mostly silent. He watches me with them very carefully. His gaze never wanders. His interest never wanes.

Number Two is mostly gentle. But it’s the other side of him I like best. The wild side.

Number Three is mostly reserved. He refuses to cross the line. Even when I beg.

It was carnal, it was sensual, and it was erotic. That’s it. That’s all it was supposed to be. A trip into the dark. A peek into the forbidden.

I just didn’t expect to like them.

Review

This book is all kinds of naughty and I love it. I love that the author took a risk with this story and was brave enough to introduce the reader into a forbidden world of darkness and ones’ darkest desires.

Bric, Quinn and Smith, while all different to their own right, really brought story together. There was just something about their unusual friendship that made me want to keep reading. I wanted to know what their deepest secrets were and why they did things they way that they did. It was exciting to find at the real reason.

Then comes along a surprise in the form of Chella, and now we have one very interesting story indeed.

Oh My! I was not expecting the coupling to go the way it did.

Then the ending was really something all together again.

Teaser - Cheers Marcella.jpg

EXCERPT – BRIC:

“I don’t know where she is. And even if I did, I wouldn’t tell you. If she wanted you guys to know where she went and what she was doing, she’d have left a note.”

“OK. That’s fine. I accept that. All we need to know is if she’s all right. That’s it. Was she stressed out?”

Marcella thinks about this for a moment and then says, “Yes. I’d call her stressed out.”

“Do you think she was afraid?”

More thoughtful consideration from Marcella. “I don’t know if I’d call it afraid. But she was crying when we talked that afternoon.”

“Do you know why?”

Marcella shakes her head no.

“No idea at all? I mean, come on, Marcella. We love her, OK? Not equally and not all in the same way. But we love her. We need to know if she needs our help.”

“She did not confide in me, Mr. Bricman—”

“Bric,” I say. “Just call me Bric.”

Marcella sighs. “I don’t have the answer you need. I promise, I’d tell you if I thought she was in trouble and needed help. I think she has something going on. For sure. But I got the feeling she was handling it.”

I nod my head and take a seat on one of the bar stools. “And you? You came upstairs…”

“I don’t want to talk about it. It was obviously a mistake.”

“Maybe,” I say. “Maybe not.”

“Your friend is weird, Bric. I’m not getting involved with him.”

“Then why did you let Quin fuck you?”

She blows out a long breath of air.

“I’m not trying to be mean, Marcella. I’m trying to understand. And I’m trying to figure out if you’re interested.”

“Interested?” She laughs. “In that sex game you were playing with Rochelle?”

“If you knew about it—and you clearly did—and you didn’t want to partake—again, you clearly did—then why let Quin fuck you?”

Marcella leans her hip into the granite counter next to the stove and folds her arms across her chest. “What do you want me to say? I was horny? It sounded dirty and I wanted to get in on it?”

“That would be a good start.”

She grunts in denial.

“We’re interested, Marcella. That’s why I’m here. We are interested.”

“You need a replacement before the weekend?”

“I have never seen Rochelle on the weekends. I have Wednesdays and Thursdays.”

“Oh.” She laughs. “My mistake. You need a fuck buddy before tomorrow?”

“Can you just be serious for a minute?”

“Sure,” she says. “Sure. Let’s be serious about what you’re offering me. You and your friends want to own me. Share me. Fuck me senseless, any way you want. Let’s get serious about this.”

“You don’t have to be condescending.” I shrug. “Some people like the dark side of sex. And let’s get real as long as we’re getting serious. You like the dark side, Marcella.” I get up and walk around the island so I’m standing in front of her. “You like the forbidden world we live in. Because if you didn’t, you’d never have agreed to whatever plan Rochelle sold you. So why don’t you just shut the fuck up with your holy self-righteous attitude and listen to my offer.”

“You have some nerve coming here—”

I grab her face with one hand, my thumb pressing into her jaw and my forefinger wrapping under her chin. “Shut. The fuck. Up.”

She breathes hard and heavy, but she doesn’t do anything but obey.

“That’s better,” I say, letting go of her face. “I’m going to pick you up on Friday and we’re going on a date.”

“I’m working Friday,” she says. Her voice is smaller now. Slightly—not all the way, but slightly—submissive.

“I know.” I’m trying my best to be patient with her. “The gallery. We know Matisse. We’re all going to that opening. So I’m going to pick you up at five-thirty and you and I are going to go together.”

“You and I?” she asks.

“Quin and Smith will be there, but you are my date. Understand?”

She says nothing, so I wait her out. When the seconds continue to tick off with no answer from her, I explain it another way. “It’s a job interview, Marcella.”

“A job?” She pulls away from me, her upper body leaning back against the granite countertop.

“A job with lots of benefits.”

#2 Turning Back

BLURB

I lived in the dark for three years. My whole world revolved around the whims and happiness of three men. It was just a trip into the forbidden. A way out of a bad situation and forward into nothingness.

Quin, with his easy smile and charming good looks. He was always there for me… Until he wasn’t.

Smith, and his dispassionate attention. He was never there for me and he never regretted it.

Bric, the one who listened, but only to himself. Self-absorbed, self-obsessed, and self-serving. He was never the one I wanted.

And now he might be the only one I have left.

It was good while it lasted, I guess. But it could’ve been so much more. It could’ve been so much better.

And that’s why I’m turning back.

I dig. It’s what I do. I’ll literally use a shovel to answer a question. Some answers, though, have been buried too deep for too long. But I’ll find those, too. Excerpt

“Why are your nails black sometimes?” I took a bite of the most disgusting chicken salad sandwich I’d ever tasted.

“Sheriff Crow comes to visit and all of a sudden you’re chatty?” Garrett leaned against my doorframe and watched as I struggled to eat the “mayo with a side of chicken” sandwich.

“I’ve always been chatty. Now it shows because the drugs have worn off and I’m not in agonizing pain.” I put the sandwich down and focused on the potato chips instead. “You’re the non-chatty one.”

He tossed my phone onto the bed. “Maybe that’s for a reason, Red.”

“What reason?” I picked it up and swiped across the screen. No service. Shit.

“I told you when you got here that I wanted you out.” He sighed. “That hasn’t changed.”

I dropped the phone with a grimace and picked at my sandwich. “Okay. And I told you that I can’t wait to leave, so we’re on the same page. Why would those facts keep you from telling me why your fingernails are covered in filth sometimes?”

“It’s not filth.” He shook his head. “While you’re lying around eating my delicious food all day without lifting a finger, I’m working.”

“On what?” In all the research I’d done, I never found Garrett to have any real source of income other than timber and oil royalties on the Blackwood property.

“Why do you care?” He crossed his arms over his chest, the rolled up sleeves of his shirt revealing some dark ink snaking across his skin.

“Why won’t you tell me?”

“Why does it matter?”

I crunched the salty chips. “It wouldn’t matter if you weren’t so stubborn about not wanting to tell me. Now I have to know.”

“You’re calling me stubborn?” He arched a dark eyebrow.

“I see your hearing is working fine.” I plucked out another chip.

His lip twitched, a smile trying to form but failing. “You don’t even know me.”

EXCERPT

“Listen up, ladies,” Max says. “I know you must be confused, so let me explain what’s going to happen.”

I can feel the air thicken with angst.

It chokes me, even though it isn’t my fear I’m feeling. It’s the girls’ fear.

“Each of you signed a contract with one of us. You were picked because you are special. You are beautiful. You are smart. You are perfect. Which is exactly why we want you. Why you now belong to us. And it’s why we chose you for this game.”

“What game?” Camilla interrupts.

Anthony lifts his finger and places it on his lips, silencing her without saying a single word.

“Our game. To win it, you must compete against each other. You will earn fifty million dollars if you win our game. The rules are simple. Entertain us in whatever way necessary, and you will win.”

“How?” I ask bluntly, not giving a shit whether I’m allowed to ask questions.

Max bites his lip. I don’t know why I see it, but I do. “By doing everything we desire. Whether it be serving us, massaging us—”

“Or undressing for us,” Anthony adds.

Devon grins. “Or being fucked in any orifice.”

“What?” Jordan’s jaw drops.

“Do you mean …” Stacey mutters.

Asya, who’s standing beside me, grabs my hand and squeezes it tight. I want to shake her loose, but I know that’s not in my best interest now. It wouldn’t look good, and I will fucking look good if I have to fight these girls for the same prize.

“Yes, you heard that right,” Max muses, his eyes honing in on my face. “Sex. Anything goes. Anywhere. Any time. Any fucking thing that we want, you will do it.”

He takes a step into my direction, one foot ahead of the other as he broadens his shoulders, obviously trying to intimidate me.

“Do you want to get fifty million dollars? Earn it. Follow the rules.” I know he’s talking to all of the girls, but his eyes are on me. “Do not defy us. Do not deny us pleasure. Fail, and you will be eliminated, the contract nullified. That’s all. Any questions?”

Eliminated.

I wonder in what sense.

Stacey raises her hand, and Max signals her to speak. “What are the rules exactly?”

Max’s wicked smile somehow finds its way into my devious little heart. “You’ll find out soon enough.”

EXCERPT

I found the place in a quiet back street some three minutes’ walk east from Piccadilly Circus. A gilded sign in the shape of a banyan leaf hung over first-floor windows.

The Banyan was not a club, but an eating-house, with rather a special clientele. It was run by a retired quartermaster, who somehow made his little pile in India. The man spoke Persian and Burmese and worked the house with Indian servants. He catered to Anglo-Indian tastes. It was the first place I was given a spoon for my curry.

According to Maxwell, men had been known to come home cursing India and all its ways—and yet turn up at the Banyan within a month. He said he went there principally to keep up his Indian vocabulary, but the fowl-curry, the chutney, and the fruit were all excellent and well worth the visit.

Though Maxwell was not a sophisticated raconteur like Maundeville, he was good company and sincerely charming. In fact, he was disconcertingly attentive. It was quite a heady thing to have his complete and unadulterated concentration. I could see no reason for it.

“How did you happen to become a physician?” he asked curiously as I finished a long, involved story that even I could see no point to.

“My father was a doctor,” I said. “One of those good old-fashioned country doctors who shepherded his flock in and out of this life for nearly the length of his own. He was greatly loved by everyone who knew him, and I thought that would be a wonderful thing. To be able to take away pain and suffering. And to be greatly loved.”

It was the truth, but it was more than I had meant to say.

“It is a wonderful thing to be able to take away pain and suffering,” Maxwell said after a moment.

“Yes. What I failed to understand was how difficult it would be when, no matter how hard you try, you can’t manage it. Or when your best effort fails to save a life. It’s a dreadful thing to have a child die in your arms.”

Maxwell’s somber expression no doubt matched my own. I said hastily, “Happily, most of my practice amounts to lancing boils and handing out headache powders.”

He laughed. “I doubt it.”

“Oh, it’s quite true. I’m not complaining. The grand career I imagined for myself would have been contrary to my own nature. I like a quiet, comfortable life.”

He stared at the ale in his glass. “You never married?”

“No, no,” I said too heartily. “No woman would have me. Congenital bachelor, I’m afraid.”

Maxwell’s eyes flicked up. He met my gaze and offered a faint, enigmatic smile.

It was not easy—in fact, it was impossible—to get him to speak of himself. Nor did he broach the subject that had inspired this tête-à-tête until at length we settled in a quiet corner of the smoking-room.

“Now,” he said with a sort of grim cheerfulness, “we’re fortified and steadied by an excellent dinner. We shall take a common-sense view of the matter before us.”

“The matter before us?”

“Your continuing involvement in this case.”

“I’m…not sure I follow.”

“It’s quite simple. To begin with we have poor Scrymgeour and D’Aurelle. Both died suddenly, and apparently alone. You knew neither of them, but you certified one death and countenanced the certifying of the other although I believe you thought both those deaths were suspicious.”

I stared at him, unable to believe my ears.

“I believe you feel you’re partly responsible—since you certified those deaths—for the fact that there has been no further inquiry. I think, too, that you joined the Society of Osiris because of those deaths, and that you have those certificates on your conscience.”

“What the devil are you talking about?” I exclaimed. “I certified what I believed to be true.”

“Would you sign them now?” he retorted. “I know you acted honestly at the time.”

“Of what exactly are you accusing me?” I asked very coldly, very quietly.

Maxwell met my stare without flinching. “It’s the truth, isn’t it? Your interest in this matter, your involvement—”

I said, “My involvement is simply one of academic interest. You and your friend have presented me with a mystery, and I mean to solve it. That is all.”

He nodded as though satisfied, though his expression remained uncharacteristically austere. I thought his eyes held an unnatural glitter, and I prepared myself for more unpleasantness. Even so, his next words were startling.

“In thinking over those two deaths, we must consider points of difference and of similarity. Both these poor fellows were bachelors, and both had independent means.”

“You believe their deaths are connected by something other than the Mummy?”

“I do. Perhaps you don’t know where their property went?”

“Well?”

“Miss Hennessey.”

I think I gaped at him. Not at the information itself, but the fact he had essentially accused the poor girl of murder.

I said as much, though I tried to keep my tone neutral. “Then you suspect Miss Hennessey of somehow engineering their deaths?”

It was Maxwell’s turn to look astonished. “Nora? Of course not. I bring up the matter only because you’re a bachelor too, though not so well provided as they were with this world’s goods. You’re an older man also.”

I laughed. He was rude and ridiculous, but I don’t suppose he realized that—or cared. “True on all counts, I’m afraid. Furthermore, I’m an observer, not a participant in this little misadventure of yours. So if your concern is for my safety, you may rest easy. I don’t believe either Miss Hennessey or the Mummy are after me.”

“I think you should retire from the case, all the same.”

I stared. He appeared to be quite serious.

“What’s brought about this change of heart?” I inquired. “You weren’t concerned for my safety five days ago.”

“Five days ago you weren’t taking tea with Miss Hennessey or having dinner with Maundeville. I—we—didn’t then appreciate the fact that there might be risk to you.” His throat jumped as he swallowed. He looked genuinely worried. “Enough people have died, Armiston. I wouldn’t like something to happen to you on our account.”

“You and Perceval have decided this between you?”

“Er…yes.” It was such an obvious lie, I almost laughed. I was too offended to find the situation humorous, however.

“I see.”

“It’s not that we’re unappreciative.”

“No. You’ve expressed your appreciation most originally.”

His brows drew together. “We should never have dragged you into this matter. That’s the truth.”

“Possibly not. But you did—I won’t say dragged me because I joined the expedition willingly enough—invite me, and there’s no going back now.”

“Of course there is.”

I shook my head. “I told you both before that I did not need your permission to continue my investigations. Such as they are.”

He leaned forward, saying with quiet intensity, “You must stop, Quentin.”

I was so surprised he knew my Christian name it took me a moment to collect my thoughts. “Shall I tell you what I think this is?”

“I’m telling you what it is!”

I shook my head. “I believe you’ve recently learned the cards are about to be drawn again. I believe you’re convinced that this time you’ll receive the Priestess. And I believe that you’re afraid that because of my…” I didn’t quite know how to phrase it without making matters more awkward than they were. I settled on, “…respect for you, I may act rashly and come to harm.”

Even in the muted light I could see he flushed and then paled. “I don’t think any such thing.”

“I hope not. I hope you don’t think I’m such a fool.”

“I don’t. Of course I don’t.” He looked stricken.

“However great my…respect for you, I’m not a man prone to rash or incautious action. I’m not the dashing hero of a romance novel. Frankly, you would be better suited to such a role than I.”

He opened his mouth, closed it, and swallowed. “I wasn’t suggesting—”

“Let’s consider the matter closed. You’ve said what you needed to say, and I’ve given you my answer.”

“Very well,” he said stiffly.

Shortly after, Maxwell and I parted. I think he couldn’t escape fast enough.

EXCERPT

“Hey,” I squealed, waving my hand in the air. I was so happy my brother would finally get to meet Jack.

He walked toward me with a smile, but when he caught sight of Jack, that smile turned into an all-out heated glare. “What the fuck are you doing here?” he growled, quickening his pace.

Jack froze and gripped my arm, grumbling, “Shit,” before pulling me around to face him. “Bristol, listen to me. This isn’t how I wanted you to find out.”

Everything was happening so fast, I didn’t know what to think. “Find out what?” I asked desperately.

Before he could reply, Ryan ripped me out of Jack’s hold and pushed him away. Jaw tense, Jack was ready to fight, but I couldn’t let that happen. “Ryan, stop!” I shouted, digging my nails in his shoulder.

Jerking his head around, he glared straight at me. “Do you even know who this cocksucker is? He’s playing you to get back at me.”

I threw my hands in the air. “What the hell are you talking about? How do you even know him?”

Jack’s eyes never left mine, the anguish on his face making me sicker by the second. I had a feeling I wasn’t going to like what came out of Ryan’s mouth. He scoffed incredulously and spat at Jack. “He’s Jaxon fucking Reed, the asshole on the team I’ve been telling you about. Don’t tell me you didn’t know?”

Jack stepped forward, but then again, that wasn’t his name. It was Jaxon Reed.
