EXCERPT

“Care to join us, little bunny?” King Loki asked as he drove into the female vampire with renewed vigor.

My busted voyeurism had just erased his boredom, sparked his interest, and made him more excited, and the vampire benefited from his hard thrusts.

Hellfire and shadow flitted in the Demon King’s eyes, power rolling off him toward me, and my ice magic rose to meet the test.

I’d been about to depart before the shit show was over, but now I had to stay a little longer.

A frosty breath escaped my lips.

There was no need to panic, I reminded myself. Even though Loki had peered through my glamour, I still had a fine leather mask in place. Only my eyes and lips were exposed, and I was hanging upside down. It wouldn’t be easy for him to piece together my true appearance.

“Call me bunny again when you see my claws,” I purred. I hadn’t meant to do that. I wasn’t the purring kind, but the fire in him called to me, and my voice sounded like sweet smoke in my ears.

What had gotten into me? Why was I flirting?

“I’d like your claws, Bunny,” he purred back. “Why don’t you show me? Your claws might just be the thing to kindle my passion.”

Marked In Flesh by Anne Bishop
The Others #4
Read March 2016
5 stars

Synopsis

For centuries, the Others and humans have lived side by side in uneasy peace. But when humankind oversteps its bounds, the Others will have to decide how much humanity they’re willing to tolerate—both within themselves and within their community…

Since the Others allied themselves with the cassandra sangue, the fragile yet powerful human blood prophets who were being exploited by their own kind, the delicate dynamic between humans and Others changed. Some, like Simon Wolfgard, wolf shifter and leader of the Lakeside Courtyard, and blood prophet Meg Corbyn, see the new, closer companionship as beneficial—both personally and practically.

But not everyone is convinced. A group of radical humans is seeking to usurp land through a series of violent attacks on the Others. What they don’t realize is that there are older and more dangerous forces than shifters and vampires protecting the land that belongs to the Others—and those forces are willing to do whatever is necessary to protect what is theirs…

Review

After the ending of the last book I couldn’t wait to get my paws on Marked In Flesh. The wait between books is just too long, but it was oh so worth it in the end. As soon as I started this book I was sucked back into the world of The Others and the human pack like no time had passed between the release of Vision In Silver and Marked In Flesh.

Anne Bishop really has a way with words and this story in no different. There is just something so captivating about the characters she creates and the world that she builds around them. As a reader, I feel as if I’m really there with the characters going through everything that they are going through at the same time.

Marked in Flesh starts out a little differently to the rest of the books in the series so far. There are a lot of POVs to consider and while it may be a little confusing as to who is say what and when, but it all makes sense the more you read. I loved reading about how different characters were reacting to the events around them. It really opened my eyes the world that Ms Bishop has created for The Others.

“We will give you some time to decide how much human the terra indigene will keep”

This books also focuses more heavily on The Others and Humans First and Last movement. The struggle between the two has hit an ultimate peak and the consequence from the actions of the HFL were felt by both sides when the Elders decided to take matters into their own hands.

After the way the last book ended I was really excited to see where Meg and Simon’s relationship would go. However with everything else that was going on, I felt that they had very little on page time together. I really wanted to see more of them. Just when I thought something major was going to happen and it didn’t, I think my heart gave out. You can do this to me. It is so unfair. I’m living for the next book. Please hurry I must find out what happens next.

PS. For some strange reason when I finished reading Marked in Flesh the first thing that came to mind was the song ‘Colours of the Wind’ from Disney’s Pocahontas. As strange as it may seem, there are lyrics in there that relate very well to this story.

For the shadows of war are deepening across the Atlantik, and the prejudice of a fanatic faction is threatening to bring the battle right to Meg and Simon’s doorstep…

Review:

It was so great to be back with Simon, Meg and the rest of the gang in the others series. I have missed them so much. However now I have to wait another year for the next chapter in their story. So not fair, but I will wait. How could I not? Everything about this series is so captivating. This is urban fantasy at it’s best.

The first half of the book focuses on giving the reader lots of information about everything that has already happened and happening with the Human First and Last movement. Some new charters are introduced, both good and bad and some that I’m still unsure about and would like to know more about.

While there didn’t seem to be a ‘big’ action event towards the end of the book, there was still some pretty major things to happen. I couldn’t believe when I was reading it that the terra indigene would like to go that far with the humans, but they do take threats very seriously. It was just a bit of a shock really.

The relationship between Simon and Meg. This is a whole other thing. It’s there but at the same time it’s not. There is just something about this couple that is so intriguing. Can’t wait to see were they are heading.

And the ending is just beautiful.

Since the series was originally 3 books, I can see how this book could be more of an information filler in the series, but I wouldn’t be skipping over it because I may have just miss something that is important in the next books. No author does world building quite like Anne Bishop. I love it so much. Can’t wait for the next one in the series now.

Synopsis

After winning the trust of the terra indigene residing in the Lakeside Courtyard, Meg Corbyn has had trouble figuring out what it means to live among them. As a human, Meg should be barely tolerated prey, but her abilities as a cassandra sangue make her something more.

The appearance of two addictive drugs has sparked violence between the humans and the Others, resulting in the murders of both species in nearby cities. So when Meg has a dream about blood and black feathers in the snow, Simon Wolfgard – Lakeside’s shape-shifting leader – wonders whether their blood prophet dreamed of a past attack or of a future threat.

As the urge to speak prophecies strikes Meg more frequently, trouble finds its way inside the Courtyard. Now the Others and the handful of humans residing there must work together to stop the man bent on reclaiming their blood prophet-and stop the danger that threatens to destroy them all.

Review

Meg’s story continues on from ‘Written in Red’, the first book in ‘The Others’ series. However this time the danger comes in the form of two new drugs on the market and people murdering crows just for fun. It is up to everyone in Lakeside to figure out a way to stop it before the ‘bomb’ goes off.

It feel like I have been waiting forever to read this book and was not disappointed; loved it from start to finish. The story is captivating, with most of the same characters returning from the first book, along with new ones. The danger is growing more and more and hopefully the next book will bring some more answers.

Do any of them realize that Simon Wolfgard is falling in love with Meg Corbyn? Monty wondered. Does Wolfgard understand his own response to the girl? What about Meg? How does she feel? What would the rest of the Others do if one of their kind did fall in love with a human?

The only downside is the wait for the next book now.

Okay. I picked up a movie to watch tonight. You can watch it with me if you like. It’s a chick movie. Merri Lee said that means girls like it, not that there are small birds in it.

Meg Corbyn is on the run. Alone and desperate, she stumbles into the Lakeside Courtyard, where the Others reside. Meg knows entering a Courtyard is a dangerous risk – most people who tangle with the Others end up dead – but it’s the only place she’ll be safe from the people chasing her.

For Simon Wolfgard, leader of the Others residing in Lakeside, Meg is a puzzle and he has to decide if she is worth the fight to keep her in the Courtyard. It will be a fight not just with the humans hunting her down, but with some of the Others – as well as a fight with his own confusing feelings towards Meg.

For Police Officer Montgomery, Meg is the property he’s supposed to recover – and the spark that could start a confrontation with the Others that would wipe out the human city of Lakeside.

There is nothing I didn’t like about this book. I just feel in love with everything; the characters, the plot and the world that Anne Bishop can so easily create.

While there are a lot of characters in the story and names to remember, it doesn’t get messy and everything is easy to follow. The plot doesn’t lag and there is a surprise upon every turn of the page.

I found it was the prefect fantasy read, with a bit a paranormal thrown in just to keep things interesting.

Where do I start?
There is so mush going on in the city of glass, yet it never seems too much. There is just enough action and drama to keep you turning the page to the very end. I was never bored along the way.
Clary, Jace and all the shadowhunters are pushed to their limits in the ultimate show down with evil. It was nice to see the shadowhunters and downworlders come together. Good truly does win but it take a lot of doing to get there.
Everybody gets to have their happy ending now, or do they?

I hate that feeling you get when a series comes to an end. I didn’t want to read the last book knowing this was going to be the case. However read it I did.
While there was not one big action scene that I thought there would be, there were still many twists and turns. Nothing is ever easy for Mal and Chrysabelle. If everything were I wouldn’t be reading these books.
A beautiful conclusion to the series. One I will surely read again.
